Xbox One Twitch streaming is on its way… finally!

It looks like Microsoft finally wrenched their finger out and have announced[1] that the Xbox One will be able to stream in about a month’s time! Bout time too!

The update is said to be coming next month with a bunch of extra features to butter your rolls. It looks like Xbox One Twitch streaming will feature

  • Live stream games (duh)
  • Start streaming using voice commands (Probs wont use it)
  • Join in on games with the broadcaster (Interesting.. I wonder what that means)
  • Archive game clips (This one’s actually great)
  • Watch Twitch streams from any device (What like what Twitch does?)

All in all it’s a good move, my major gripe is that it’s a bit of a late play. It’s in no way a killer feature or anything as the PS4 was already doing it at launch, but it definitely doesn’t hurt to finally have the ability to stream directly from the console!

Emmett Shear the CEO of Twitch is completely loving it, quoted as saying

“It’s exciting because we’ve never had the ability to broadcast from a console like this with such a deep level of integration”

“[..] another step in the direction of interacting more closely with broadcasters”

in regards to being able to jump in to someone’s party.. whatever that means. To be fair I’d rather just have a stream that wasn’t however many seconds delayed so that the chat was useful. But I’m just being grumpy now.

Responding to the questions of “Why has this taken so long?” Yusuf Mehdi, VP of Marketing and Strategy for Xbox is quoted as saying

Our fans really want the full next-gen service, so that’s why we decided to take our time, do it right and have it come out in this fashion

which is fair enough I guess. It’d have been nice to have the full next-gen service when the service was paid for, but close enough. It’ll do!

We’ll have to see how many people start streaming from their Xbox. According to Twitch last month 20% of its streams (and it has a lot of streams!) were from “PS4 owners” (Does this mean PS4 was used to stream or that the streamers just own a PS4 somewhere? Stats can say anything if you word them right!). 1.7 million streams have been broadcast through PS4 since the launch back in November

Bottom line of the story is that the Xbox One is getting its streaming functionality, Twitch is loving it. I’m just hoping it works without being a pain in the bum!
